Namba is the southern downtown core of Osaka, known locally as Minami. Per the Osaka tourism bureau, the area covers Dotonbori canal, the Glico-runner sign, the Kuromon Ichiba market, and the Shinsaibashi-suji covered shopping arcade running north. The character is entertainment, food, and neon. Restaurants run late; the Dotonbori canal is rarely quiet. Lonely Planet describes Namba as the most concentrated street-food district in Japan outside Tokyo.

Who should book here

Namba suits these travellers.

Namba suits first-time visitors who want everything walkable from the door. Most major sights inside the city sit on the Midosuji subway line, which runs the length of central Osaka and stops at Namba. Foodies do well here for obvious reasons. Couples wanting a street-food atmosphere book here for the canal-side restaurants and the late-evening energy. Returning Osaka visitors who want the city's loudest face book here too. Backpackers and budget travellers find capsule hotels and Toyoko Inn properties around the station, although the cheapest rooms in central Osaka tend to be a few stops south in Tennoji.

Walking the neighbourhood

A day in Namba.

Morning. Coffee at one of the small specialty roasters along Mido-suji, then breakfast at Kuromon Ichiba market (the market opens around 9am; the freshest stalls sell out fast). The market is a five-minute walk east of Namba station per the Osaka tourism bureau's area map.

Afternoon. Walk north up Shinsaibashi-suji to Amerikamura for vintage clothing and the small-bar district. Crossing back into Namba via the canal is the standard Dotonbori photograph.

Evening. Hozenji Yokocho's lantern-lit alley is the calmer dinner option; the canal-front blocks of Dotonbori are the louder one. Hokkyokusei (the original omurice restaurant) and the takoyaki specialists Wanaka and Konamon Museum sit within five minutes of the canal.
