Tennoji sits at the southern edge of central Osaka. Shitennoji Temple, founded in 593, is described by the Japan Tourism Agency as one of the country's oldest officially-administered temples. Tennoji Park and Abeno Harukas (one of Japan's tallest buildings per its operator's site) anchor the district. The character is quieter than Namba and Umeda, and prices run noticeably lower. Shinsekai, immediately south, holds the retro-neon evening atmosphere and the kushikatsu specialists.

Who should book here

Tennoji suits these travellers.

Budget travellers book Tennoji for the cheapest mainstream-area rates in Osaka. The hostel and capsule-hotel density is highest here. Repeat visitors who want a less-touristy base book Tennoji for the calmer streets and the temple-and-park aesthetic. Travellers using the JR Yamatoji line for Nara day trips (35 minutes) find Tennoji is the practical base. The Osaka Marriott Miyako, atop Abeno Harukas, gives the area its single luxury option.

Walking the neighbourhood

A day in Tennoji.

Morning. Shitennoji Temple opens around 8:30am per its official site; the temple grounds are free to walk and the inner sanctum is paid entry. Tennoji Park and the Tennoji Zoo are immediately north.

Afternoon. Day-trip on the JR Yamatoji line to Nara (35 minutes), or up to Osaka Castle (12 minutes via the Tanimachi line).

Evening. Walk south into Shinsekai for the retro- neon Tsutenkaku Tower and a kushikatsu dinner; the Daruma chain is the long-running specialist.

Sub-area

Shinsekai (annotation)
